When I was little my Dad used to cut up cucumbers and put them in this vinegar/sour cream sauce. I loved it and thought the man was a genius. I still hold my Dad in very high regard, however I now know that he was making what is a common and pretty classic recipe – Cucumber Salad.
In my teenage years I developed my love for buffalo sauce. I’ve tried and liked many buffalo sauces, but for me, Franks Hot Sauce is always the winner. There’s simply nothing better!
One day, I was in the kitchen in the home I grew up in and my Dad had whipped up another batch of his cucumber salad. I got curious, put a couple dashes of Frank’s into the mixture, did a quick taste test, and added some more in. Absolutely delicious! And Dad approved too, so I knew I had a winner.
Fast forward to my 30s and I have this wonderful garden and I’m friends with people who have gardens, and have been lucky enough to be given cucumbers fresh from their garden (totally growing cucumbers in mine next year), so as I thought about the various recipes I could make with my abundance of cucumbers my childhood memory of eating this dish with my Dad came flooding back.
I decided to spice up this classic dish with my hot sauce twist and throw in some blue cheese crumbles for a true “buffalo” experience.
The sauce was as great as I remember; the spice of the hot sauce is cut with the cool creaminess of the sour cream, and the vinegar is a must; throwing a layer of tanginess into the sauce that soaks up into the cucumbers.
It’s a refreshing and healthy snack that sings to all of your taste buds with a variety of flavors, plus it’s a great snack you can make in under 10 minutes for at home or even to bring to potlucks and parties!
